Richard Dawkins

Blame this man for the birth of Memes

A meme is, by definition, any thought or idea that catches on and replicates, much like a strand of DNA or a virus does, in the human mind. Human society is built upon memes and their replications, and much of what we see around us a meme. From the clothes we wear to the computers we use. It's all an idea--an idea that has become infectious and spread. They may not actually be very helpful, but these novelty items have collected, and we have built our society around them.

The phrase was originally coined by Richard Dawkins in his book, The Selfish Gene. Since then, the word "meme" has, for the most part, gone unnoticed in the day-to-day workings of the world, until the internet came around. Upon its inception, the creation and spread of memes accelerated, most of them cultural. Many may never leave the place of their birth; typically 4chan, but some will find great success and become a repost of a repost in a vain attempt to be original and funny, when in fact they become over used and annoying. In fact, the ones on the Sporum never were funny. They lost all notions of being funny the second they appeared. Some guy even tried to make his terrible 'Tibia' creation a meme.

The following is a list of localized Sporum memes:
